What I find so endearing is that my grandmother took the time to create her own version for us. Of course, folk versions of this game had been around since at least the sixteenth century, but it was William Hurter’s implementation, Memory, that cemented Ravensburger as the premier manufacturer of games at the 1959 Nuremberg toy fair. Cleverly, my grandmother’s design allowed for two variants - one where one simply matched identical pies, and another where the pies had to be matched with an image of the appropriate fruit. When my sister and I would visit her, these were used as the cards in a makeshift version of the matching game known in England as Concentration. My grandmother, a necessarily frugal woman, would collect the boxes from Lyon’s individual fruit pies and carefully cut out the images on the front of the boxes. Preface Although I didn’t know it at the time, the first table game I can remember playing could loosely be considered German in origin. Rather, we are discussing multidimensional phenomena, varied in the cultural purpose to which they are applied and inherently susceptible, for these varied reasons, to many possible systems of conceptual analysis.-Sutton-Smith & Avedon, 1971a, p. When we discuss games, we are not discussing certain biologically inevitable occurrences, though they may be ethologically probable. 9.Ī Brief Introduction to Hobby Games Anglo-American Hobby Board Games 1960–1995 Gesellschaftsspiele - Gaming in Germany From German Games to Eurogames The Eurogame Genre Hobby Gamers The Pleasures of Play Goals and Outcomes in Social Play An Act Apart?Ĭonclusion Chapter Notes Bibliography Indexġ5 32 46 63 79 120 146 173 194 210 217 231 257 McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers Box 6¡¡, Je›erson, North Carolina 28640 Table of Contents Preface Introduction 1.
